So here's the latest attempt at some new colors. THis is the pink sweater unraveled and dyed with a mixture of oragne and green to try to get brown. Then just some red and orange. Those seem to be the easiest colors to get Here you can see the brown a little more in the close up. I tied to get it to stand out next to the red. I need to experiement some more.

So here is my latest kool aid dye. I just did llittle skeins to compare the different reds out there. Watermelon cherry seems to be the lightest red. Not quite pink. And kool aid strawberry and Disney cool splashers Cherry seem to be the deepest. Next up, dyeing these two big ole balls of recycled goodwill sweater yarn. I want to make some funky verigated stuff going on with these.

Someone from KH asked me how I made my legwarmers and here is my reply:
Hi Femmy, My dd Julia wants some legwarmers. Have you written out your pattern yet? If not, could you explain to me how you made the open heel? Thanks, Candace
So I been thinking about it and I don't really have a pattern. What I did was made a swatch out of the yarn I was using with some needles I thought were good. I found out how many stitches per inch I got. Then I measured my foot and my leg and stuff and figured out how many stitches to cast on from that. I started with the foot. I knit about 2 or 2 and half inches of k2 P2 ribbing on 3 dbl points in the round. Then I did few rows of stockinette. THen I cast off half the number of stitches on the needles. On the next round where the cast off stitches were I cast on the same number of stitches I cast off. Then I did a few more rows of stockiette. All of this I did in one color so as not to be too confusing. I continued in stockinette all the way up the leg, switching colors every inch and a half or so. And with each color change I would add a stich at the begining and at the end of each color change so by the time I got mid calf I had abdout doubled the number of stitches. When it got to mid calf I went back to k2 P2 ribbing in yet another color for about 2 inches and cast off. THat's it. I'mnot sure how to make this a more foral pattern. I rarely use patterns. I usually eyeball measurements and guestamate sizes. I think I'll have to get help from Ingy if I try to make a more formal pattern. I hope this helps! Good luck! :muah: Peace Lori

So here's a FO. I made the mitered square rug from Interweave knits. It was a pattern I got from the subscribers website. I just love making this. I don't know why. Maybe becasue each square is samll and I get a quicker sense of that instant gratification over the malabrigo hourglass sweater I'm also working on (and taking forever) I needed some rugs too. I'm gonna make some more. We have cables on the floor going from room to room cuz I got a new computer and put my old one in my son's room but in order for himto get on the internet we have to strech a super long cable from the outlet of the cable source (in my room) down the hall and into his room. We keep tripping over cables al day so I'm gonna need a few more rugs to cover them up.

My son has been teasing me about "being in loooooooooove" with Mike Rowe. Yes, he's a babe. But I have a feeling he and I would not be a good match. I have a feeling we have different value systems. But it is nice to look at him. And yes I did knit him a pair of socks and sent them to him (I have no idea if he got them and/or is actually wearing them). And it is quite funny to hear a 10 year old making goo goo eyes at me about it. But its just so pathetic.......

This a brand new copy. My mum got it for me but I never look at it. Retails for $15 but you can have it for $10.
Stoller's Stitch 'N Bitch and Stitch 'N Bitch Nation have become icons of the knitting craze: every hip young needleworker has at least one of them next to the yarn stash. Now, she uses the same approach that made her knitting books so successful in this entrée to sexed-up hookwork that takes pains to show crocheting isn't for grandma anymore. Stoller provides everything short of the hook and yarn a crafter will need to learn how to crochet. From a history of the craft to mind-bogglingly complete instructions and dozens of charted and explained patterns (the majority of which are for women's clothing and accessories-there are no afghans here), it's all presented in Stoller's bright, witty style and accompanied by cheery color photographs.

Each charted motif is complete with data indicating the number of stitches and rows required to repeat a single pattern; in addition, a number of the charts are shown in different colorways. I hope this is OK. If I didn't do this right let me know. Peace Lori OK So I love this yarn. Very pretty and soft. But I have no idea what to make with it. Gotta let it go. 3 skeins of Praire Silk from Brown Sheep. Not verigated, just a solid yellow. It's 10% silk, 18% mohair and 72% wool. So it is NOT superwash. 88 yards, sugg needle size is size 8. Ususally retails for $6-7. You can have it for $4. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/361676/prariesilk.jpg This yarn is from a funky yarn store in San Francisco Called Artfibers. http://www.artfibers.com/ The dark purplish color is called Basque, its 58% silk and 42% Superkid mohair. Its 110 yards, gauge is 18 by 23 =4 inches on #7 needle. The label says 93 yards makes a 1 foot square in stockinette. the pinkish color is called Kyoto. Retails between $6-8, you can have it for $4 each. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/361676/DBlissSohoLambPr.jpg I got a bunch of mohairs. The rainbow colored stuff is Luxury Mohair from King Cole. 78% mohair, 13 % wool and 9% nylon. 110 yards, rec needle size is 9 but its real thin and wispy. I used it straned with another color to give the hat softness and jazz up the color. Retails for $6-7, you can have it for $4. The dark purple is Sirdar color soft. 60% mohair, 125 yards chunky. I have 2 or 3 of these. Retails for $6-7, you can have it for $4. So you can have it for $5 each. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/361676/KidMohair.jpg Next is a bunch of Dale of Norway. There's some full skeins and a bunch of little leftovers. Some are Daletta, Heilo or Tiur. All are 100% wool. I guess I would call it sport weight or sock weight. Good on size 2 or 3 needles. I can wrap the skeins around my 3 foot long table to see exactly how many yards are in in each little blob. They retail between $5-6, you can have them $3 for the full skeins. if you want a bunch of little blobs of colors (good for making socks?) then $1 for used ones. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/361676/KidMohair.jpg I also have more books, magazines and yarn for sale too! Looking for something specific, just ask! All prices negotiable.

So I finished Teddy's sweater and now I'm on to a floor mat for the kitchen floor in front of the sink (my son is a slob at doing the dishes) Its using up that bag of cotton I got at Goodwill for $1.99 and big needles. I'm holding 3 strands at once so it'll be nice and thick.

So I went through all my yarn and patterns and I have laid out a plan. Sort of. I saw this fabulous pattern for a teddy bear knit all in one piece on Knitty Gritty the other day. My son and I were watching it and he might make one too! Anyway, That would be a great project for my TLC acrylic stash. Then for my cotton stash I wanna make some log cabin floor mats for my kitchen. I need floor mats for my kitchen desperately. And I love the log cabin patterns in Mason Dixon knitting (I got it from the library, my own personal pattern resource). Then I want to make an earflap hat. I tried with the ultra alpaca from Borocco but it's just not going to happen. Maybe I'll make some socks out of it or just a plain ole ribbed hat. I think I'll use my mmmmmmmmmmmalabrigo stash for the earflap hat instead. Then there is the rainbow leg warmers to use up all the microspun and the rest of the Touche (socks). OK that's enuf projects going at once

OK so I had my last class the other day adn the only other thing I have to do today is apply for GA position with the head of the doctoral program so I'll have plenty o time to blog and post pics. Also my kid is leaving town for a week to play with his Grammie and Grandpa in Seattle (WOOHOO!!) so I'll have even more time. But so far I've given up on the swell hat from knitty. I just don't like carrying. I may make it with some of my mmmmmmmmmmmmmmalabrigo instead. Still making more rainbow legwarmers, some socks from my Touche stash and a sweater for my son's teddy. THe old one was kinda ratty. OK gotta get into "I'm so impressive you want to hire me" letter writing mode. ~~~~~~~

Done with the first rainbow legwarmer that I knit for my plane tirp project to San Fran. It's a little tight at the top (I cast off too tight) but it'll do. Check out the open heel. THis way when I wear them to dance class they won't wear out as fast.

I am in Oakland California!!! I'm here for the NWSA conference. (Natl women's Studies Assoc). So far I've been to some good sessions and some where I just sat and knit and daydreamed. TOmmorrow looks like a couple of interesting sessions and then I'm spending the rest of the weekedn in SanFrancisco looking for City Lights book store, yarn stores and lesbians. Here's some pictures I took with my new digital camera. This cheapo thing has a bad focus. One shot is of the bay at sunset and waaaaay in the corner on the horizon line I could see Golden Gate Bridge but the camera just got an out focus shot of a bunch of crane looking things. My room in this hotel is in the corner and quiet but the wifi stops right at my door. So I'm sitting in the lobby. There is only one small 5 foot square spot of wifi at the conference center (a conference center with no wifi?) I guess if they had it all over the center for free then they wouldn't be ablr to charge us for it. Anyway here's some phots.

So now I'm working on these leg warmers for my dance class. They're going to be rainbow hopefully. My calves get so tight when I go on tip toe I need something to keep the muscles warm. It's also a way to get rid of this darn bunch of microspun. My cat can be so funny sometimes.

Here's a scarf I've been working on. It's made of Borocco's Touche. I love it! It's so soft. It's cotton and Modal. I ran out of the pink for the edge just two feet shy of the end of the bind off edge! GGGrrrr!

This is another $4 sweater form goodwill. Originally from the gap, this one is cotton. It is really soft. I would love to make some comfy socks out of it. It really is too loud for a whole sweater. I haven't started unraveling it yet. Are my pictures looking blurry?

Here' a J Crew sweater I got at Goodwill for like $4. The label says 100% wool. I'm unraveling it. Maybe I'll knit with it, maybe I'll sell it. Maybe I can over dye it. I wonder if its superwash or if it will felt?

OK so I have knitted a bunch of stuff but my camera is being a putz. I SOOOO need a new one. The SUnday Flyer for Target says they got cameras on sale for $88. I'm thinking about it. I did manage to get this one photo of the Waterlily top from the latest issue of interweave knits. I made it out of cotton instead of ribbon.

OY! So busy with this dam paper!!! I hate working in isolation. And it takes away from all my knitting. I been having so much trouble with that dam waterlilly shirt. I have 10 skeins of this really lovely cotton verigated stuff I got on sale from WEBS many moons ago. I don't think 10 will be enough though so I thought I found some sellers who have some (I think it's discontinued) so I ordered it but then they said they didn't have the color I want. So I've had to improvise. I'm using some double stranded DK wieght cotton to match the lovely verigated and using it for the borders. I hope this works. We'll see.

http://uk.tickle.com/test/lesbianicon/start.html Who Is Your Lesbian Icon? Your lesbian icon is Radclyffe Hall! Radclyffe Hall Every minority group has their heroes, and Radclyffe Hall stands up there with the best of them for daring to speak her mind, even when it went against what society thought was right. Her controversial book The Well of Loneliness was published in 1928 on the subject of what was described at the time as 'sexual inversion' was declared to be obscene by the Home Secretary and later banned from sale until over twenty years later. Whilst you may not share Radclyffe's anarchic streak, you probably do appreciate that some things are worth standing up for. It is partly due to the fact that people have campaigned against discrimination that the UK government no longer locks people up if their sexuality does not fit into the considered norms of society. Sometimes it needs a high profile case to bring an unjust scenario to the public attention, but we think that you probably do your bit to reduce repression around you, even if you don't realise it.

OK so now I am attempting the famous Fiber Trends clogs. I bought this yarn for it many moons ago and have been distracted by xmas gifts, my sons demands for mittens, friends having babies and other committments. Well committments be damed! I'm making soething for me! But as I got inot I now see that maybe I should've put it off longer Damn these things are hard. The pattern is all these covaluded short rows that are so intricate, if you miss counting then you gotta rip out the whole thing. So here's a photo of my progress so far.

There's a new Micheals. Well not new new but new to me. Took my kid to Janzen Beach last night adn there it was. Right where the old R.E.I. used to be. They didn't have anything new or different though. Just exciting to see yarn. My son found some paint by numbers kits he wanted. But then again he wanted everything. He's become very greedy latley. Whenever we go out he's always wanting something. And he hsa so much stuff already his room is getting really cluttered. Don't know what is up with that. Maybe he's not getting enough attention formm me. At least I feel good about taking him out. When he's with his dad, they sit around the house doing nothing. So he's got that balance going on I suppose. It's just so hard listening to him whine. MEMEMEMEME. He's 10 and that's his job but its just hard to put up with. Especially when I have so much work to do. I have a syllabus to hand in for my class next term I'm teaching (Sex, Power and Consumption) I have to continually work on my Core paper (I should proobably defend this summer) plus my classes, my job, eat right, excercise, get enough sleep, blah blah blah. I just dopped a ton of money on new glasses (since I broke the ones I'm wearing at the mountain when we went inner tubing). I feel good about giving all my money to my eye doctor rather than those thieves at the mall. I went there first thinking I'd save money but they have NO customer service and it just felt icky. So I made an appointment with my eye doctor. Even though I don't have coverage on my insurance for glasses anymore, I wewnt anyway. He is so cool. So patient adn reassuring and helpful. You really do get more for your money. Got stood up for lunch yesterday. Was supposed to meet this woman who I adore. She's the only other black woman in woman's studies I can relate to. I want to work with her in a sort of mentorship relationship. She has cool dreds too and I want some just like it. I was hoping to talk to her about co-publishing a paper. I have to get on the ball with publishing. And everyone is so busy its hard to find someone who has time to publish with me. Although I really thing I should approach the women in the WRC about it too. We'll see. I've been making little coofee bras for the WRC with little V's on them for Vagina Monologes. Gotta post some pictures.

Finished the other sock for Mike Rowe and some baby socks for my friend. Now I can move on to more socks for my cousins, finishing my blue scarf and start on some felted clogs I been wanting to make. I also got some more yarn (as a thank you from Kitkat on the KH boards) from Patternworks today. Manos mmmmmmmm I need to do something to keep my mind off all this drama at school. I got shafted out of a job. THe good old boy network strikes again. I have requested a formal inquiry so we'll see what happens. I have schoolwork to do, a kid to raise and now I have to find anoter job. IT's not like I have time for them anyhow. There's a new Jonnes opening up close by, maybe I'll apply there. Hell maybe I'll just drop out of grad school and work there full time, build up a reputation as the world's best knitting teacher and open my own shop. AAAAAHhh yes what a nice dream.

SSSSooooo tired this morning. Had horrible dreams about snakes eating each other. I love snakes but in the middle of the night I woke up terrified of them. We have a pet corn snale we got for our son. The snake hasn't been in my mind lately so I don't know why I'm dreaming about it. I guess it must be a metaphor for something. Something is eating me. Stress I suppose. Either that or I need to get laid.

Buddhism confuses me. From what I've read it’s supposed to be about compassion and kindness and alla that but then the mediation is all about yourself. And you're supposed to not think about anything. like you're supposed to be blank. Just focusing on the breath, don't let the mind wander. So even if I do accomplish that, when I'm done my mind goes right back to being all nutty. I've been reading and mediating and doing yoga now for months and I still feel as anxiety ridden as I ever did. My blood pressure has not gone down either. The thing is, I have not done anything significant to change my life. I've just added all this breathing and stretching which is nice but it hasn't helped me cope with the fact that I am living in a white supremacist capitalist patriarchy that wants nothing more than to see me fail. And doing yoga and breathing does nothing to change this system of oppression and domination. And it hasn't really changed me. So WTF?

So I've noticed a lot of knitters discussing color lately as "girl" colors and "boy" colors. Or saying things like "boys can't wear purple" or "Oh you're having a baby? Is it a boy or a girl so I know what color xyz to make for them." I'm sooooooo tired of this!!! This is how sexism is perpetuated. Its so unconscious though, folks don't even know they are doing it. That's why its my job to step in and enlighten them. Now here's the tricky part. Folks don't want to be enlightened. They enjoy living in their predictable sexist boxes. SO the way I see it, for me to spread the word of feminism is like christian evangelists who spread their word. Hopefully there are some out there who want to hear it. Maybe I should make pamphlets and go door to door.
