Here is my attempt at making a hat that it open in the back for my hair to fit through.

The only problem is I made it as a stright tube so it's all bunchy under my neck and a litte too high on the top, exposing too much head.

The yarn sure is purdy though. This is the yarn my mum bought me at the craft fair this summer. I think I will rip back halfway and try some shaping.

This is sorry attempt at felting. I suck at felting. It was supposed to be a bag which I guess it is but its all wonky looking. I just made 2 squares and a long strip as the strap and sewed it all together. I should try the booga bag.

My son drew on this pumpkin in preparation for cutting it but then he stood back and said "I think I took it too far" He's gonna try again.

It's the day of messed up attempts. Well......at least we tried.

I have to rethink any knitting for charity projects. The pressure to finish on time makes me do stoopid things. Look here:

So I'm back from my "vacation" in Massachusetts. Well cape cod really. My mother actually took time off from work to be with us. We went shopping and ate lots of food. And my mother actually bought me some yarn.

We were at a craft fair and we came across this tent with all this yarn. It is hand spun by this woman with only one hand. Here's her website: www.KPFiberarts.etsy.com
She was very cool. Talked to everyone while spinning right there. I was oohing and aaahing and my mum said "pick one."

Then we went to Falmouth that has 8 cousins bookstore, a whole bookstore with kids books. My son loves it. I don't think there are any children's bookstores in Oregon. There is also a little shop called Sage that has little chachkies and in the back a whole slew of yarn. I got this for $9, clearance (over 400 yards!)

I did some knitting on the beach

And finished my sock in the Las Vegas airport in between flights. Yup, they got slot machines in the airport.

Here it is on my foot.

So basically we visited family and went shopping and went to the movies and went to the beach and ate lots of food so that counts as a vacation. Here's my cousin acting silly. She's 9

But it is soooooo good to be home. I have never felt homesick as this last trip. Sometimes I can't believe I came from Boston. I'm such an Oregonian now. sigh.

So here is a test run of some yarn I dyed with kool aid. Tried to make rainbow but it doesn't seem rainbowee enuf for me. I tried two different leg hole openings, ribbed and stright stockinette to make it curl (not much curl) but they are both too small and tight. Gotta take thos eout and try again. Ah well. Now I know what to do next time.

Finished the turtle washcloth. I'm gonna give it to my mum since she likes both turtles and the color purple. I can't believe how hard this pattern was. You had to twist the stitches a lot to get them to make the shell. Cotton is not as forgiving as wool is too. But its done. so there.

Finished my rainbow yarn socks. Didn't like the toe up version. I'll still with cuff down. I like the German yarn a lot. I hoep I can get more. (Lorna;s Laces on the left, German stuff on the right)

So I was at Micheals and they had Sugar and Cream in sale. I got 710 yards for $5. Now I gotta figure out what to make with it.

So here's my start of a gauge swatch. I'm starting with my smallest needles (1.5 I think) then 2, 3, 4 and I;ll probably stop at 5.

OK so I found some blue Kool aid in Portland!!! So I tried it out on some scrap yarn. It didn't even take!! I figured out that it is pre-sweetened stuff. It only works with UNsweetened. So whatever. But I made a reusable swiffer from some leftover cotton. And a new yarn store opened in Portland and I got a hank of some yummy sock yarn!!

Sigh. I bought more yarn. It was a sympathy purchase. It was a small out of the way shop that doesn't look like it gets a lot of business. I had to buy something. And this purple was so pretty and the yarn was so soft. I've never knit with frog tree before. I think it'll make a nice hat.

This is so cool I found it here: http://wild_deer.typepad.com/

the needs of knitters of color

i jinxed myself. yesterday i remember thinking, "wow! i'm in such a fantastic mood and it's been such a great week and everything is just swell!" (yes, the voice in my head likes to use the 'swell'.) naturally, for no good reason, i woke up in a cross mood this morning. i've done all the things i'd normally do to shake it off like taking my dog on a long walk around the lake while listening to an inspirational talk on my ipod. knitting and watching movies, eating my favorite ben & jerry's (chocolate fudge brownie), all to no avail. i even had a post (with pictures!) planned and then the rechargeable batteries that i use in my digital camera decided that they could be charged no more and, alas, i have no pictures and that post had to be postponed. in the midst of all of this, i was phone interviewed by someone writing an article on how knitting shops can attract more knitters of color. i have a near paranoid fear of being misquoted and while i won't repeat word for word my thoughts on this (mostly because my brain is like a sieve and i couldn't recall exactly what i've said), i do feel a need to go on the record before this article comes out and i'd like to explore my thoughts a bit further than i did in the interview. the question was 'how can yarn shops market to knitters of color?' people that have things to sell are always on the lookout for ways to expand their market. it's a fair question for a person on that side of the fence to ask. however, as a consumer who happens to be a member of the market in question, i find it a bit awkward and, perhaps, regressive. i did tell the interviewer that i felt it to be an awkard question. i didn't mention that i also felt it to be regressive. in that moment, i felt that i needed to give it a bit more thought before i went there and i wasn't really in the mood to get all militant about knitting. it was a well-intentioned question from someone representing the yarn industry. however, my immediate thought was 'why would my needs as a knitter/shopper be any different from anyone else's?' i'm all about erasing boundaries and categories and boxes, not creating more. are yarn shops wondering how they can attract more gay shoppers or asian shoppers? maybe they are. it just gets weird for me when an industry tries to capitalize upon my blackness. what's needed is for more black people to open yarn shops in black communities. that will make a lot of black knitters really happy! i've never felt uncomfortable in any yarn shop because i'm black. am i often the only black person in a yarn shop? yes. however, i'm often the only black person in the local Saks Fifth Avenue, but it has yet to dissuade me from buying a pair of shoes. thus, the issue of rarely seeing another black face present in a yarn shop is a non-issue for me. like my trips to Saks, i'm there to feed an expensive habit and then leave before i have a chance to change my mind. if we're talking about an issue of community, i'd be more likely to hang out with a group of knitters that included knitters of color provided that i felt that i had something in common with them beyond a little melanin. i thrive on diversity. my ideal knitting community would include people of all colors, sexual orientations, religions, ethnic backgrounds, etc. too much of any one thing is boring for me. however, i digress... i certainly cannot speak for all knitters of color in regard to the question posed. i'd love to hear what you all have to say about this. do you as a knitter of color feel that you have special, other, or different needs from your white sister/brother knitters? do you feel left out or excluded from the greater knitting community? i'm really, curious to find out what your experiences are and what you think.

i'm off to unwind with a glass of wine before the oscars. happy knitting!

The Sonnet
Deliberate Gentle Love Dreamer (DGLDf)

Romantic, hopeful, and composed. You are the Sonnet. Get it? Composed?

Sonnets want Love and have high ideals about it. They're conscientious people, caring & careful. You yourself have deep convictions, and you devote a lot of thought to romance and what it should be. This will frighten away most potential mates, but that's okay, because you're very choosy with your affections anyway. You'd absolutely refuse to date someone dumber than you, for instance.

Your exact opposite:
Genghis Khunt

Random Brutal Sex Master
Lovers who share your idealized perspective, or who are at least willing to totally throw themselves into a relationship, will be very, very happy with you. And you with them. You're already selfless and compassionate, and with the right partner, there's no doubt you can be sensual, even adventurously so.

You probably have lots of female friends, and they have a special soft spot for you. Babies do, too, at the tippy-top of their baby skulls.

ALWAYS AVOID: The Stiletto, The Battleaxe, Genghis Khunt, Half-Cocked

CONSIDER: The Peach

Amazonian...

You scored 73 Open-Mindedness, 69 Sexual Comfort, 75 Tolerance, and 72 Confidence!

Whether you do or don't is besides the point but you can crush people at will. You scare the crap out of insecure people. You need a mate that can keep up and give you a run for your money. Whimps need not apply. Your strong in every sense of the word. Just try to ease up a bit when the situation does not call for dominance.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
